New Jersey Divorce Lawyer Explains What to Bring to Your First Consultation

You’ve chosen your attorney. You’ve done your due diligence, gathered your documents, spoken to the New Jersey Divorce Lawyer on the phone and felt comfortable. Now, you’re actually going to go meet the person. It’s not going to be a fun day. You’re going to wake up, and you’re going to have agita. What do you do? Do you know what to bring with you? By bringing copies of your documents and other information with you, you will save a couple of dollars right off the bat.

Don’t think you’re going to go in there, sit down, and just be able to speak, because that may not happen. You may cry. You may be upset. It’s a terrible time. It’s an emotional time for you. Your attorney isn’t emotional, but you are. As you prepare to meet with your attorney for the first time, gather as much documentation and paperwork as you can for your family, bank accounts, tax returns, et cetera. Make copies for the attorney and say to the attorney, “This is your copy.” Also, bring a written list of your questions.

Most importantly, bring a good attitude. It’s a terrible time. That first meeting can be just horrific, partly because you don’t know anything about the process, and the unknown often causes agita. Sometimes, clients ask me, “Why, why, why?” I say, “Are you a five-year-old or something? You’re asking me why everything.” I can’t explain the backstory and history of the divorce process, or why legislators enacted certain laws.

After 20 years, you get to know the process and the laws. It’s important to work with an experienced attorney who can explain some of the reasoning behind the laws. At some point, however, no matter how smart you are, you’re just not going to “get it.” That’s why you have to believe in and trust your attorney and the action plan you and that attorney put together – so you can just go through this process.

When you visit your attorney the first time, bring your paperwork, a list of questions, and a good attitude. I’m a New Jersey Divorce Lawyer who has amassed a lot of experience. I can work with you, put an action plan together, and guide you through one of the most challenging experiences you will ever face. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
