What You Should Do When Served with Divorce Papers
You’re sitting there on Saturday afternoon, and there’s a knock on the door. You open it, and somebody serves you divorce papers you had no idea were coming. Or, maybe you’ve been fighting with your spouse and knew they were coming, but you didn’t want to do anything until they arrived. Once you read them, you have no idea what you’re reading because they seem to be written in a foreign language. What do you do?
The first thing you do is gather documents and data. Guess what? The process is starting, and it can continue with or without you. Get the data: documents from the banks, tax returns, documents that verify your assets, debts, et cetera. Start piecing everything together financially, and start looking for a lawyer. Probably, the first thing you should do when you get the divorce papers is – just take a breath. Take a breath and recognize where you are and your position as far as this process. It’s a situation where you don’t want a long-winded battle with your spouse.
Try to identify the issues, take a breath, gather data – and then get a New Jersey Divorce Lawyer. Put together an action plan and get up, get in, and get out of the process as soon as possible. I’m a partner here at Weiner Lesniak in the Family Law department. I’ve worked as a family attorney for approximately 20 years, and I’m certified as a matrimonial attorney by the New Jersey State Supreme Court. I can help you put together an action plan and take you through this process. Please feel free to contact me here at the office at any time.
